ChemMatCARS director P. James Viccaro recently received an award in recognition of his dedication as a mentor to Janet Soltau of the University of Vermont, who worked at ChemMatCARS in the summer of 2009. The award was presented through the Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists program of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science. Janet’s work at CARS was supported by the DOE’s Pre-Service Teachers program.

Janet was also mentored by ChemMatCARS staff members Binhua Lin, Brian Leahy, and K.I. Kim, who together supervised her project on the surface morphology of monolayers of silver nanoparticles. Janet was among 100 DOE-funded undergraduate researchers selected to present their posters at a competition in November 2009 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
